Mula means "the root", and its deity is Nirriti, goddess of dissolution — the force that pulls things apart to reach their origin. This is the nakshatra of getting to the bottom, of investigation that does not stop at appearances. Ketu rules it, giving detachment, sharp inquiry and a certain fatedness; Mula often lives through upheavals that strip life back to essentials. The tearing-up can become destructive — of its own life and others’ — when it uproots without rebuilding. Mula can be harsh, extreme, restless and prone to sudden reversals, and it can mistake demolition for progress. The detachment can shade into recklessness or a cold disregard for what it breaks, and its bluntness can wound people who deserved gentler handling. The work is to dig with care — to reach the root without needless destruction, to rebuild after it clears the ground, and to spare the people who are not the problem.

Tradition points Mula toward work that reaches foundations: research and science, medicine (especially herbs and roots), philosophy and spirituality, investigation, reform, any field that digs to the cause. These people do well where depth and unsparing honesty are needed, and where the right answer means undoing a comfortable assumption. In relationships they are intense and truthful but turbulent, and the growth edge is gentleness — building as much as they break, and holding steady through the upheavals they pass through.
