Jyeshtha Nakshatraज्येष्ठा

Jyeshtha means "the eldest", and its deity is Indra, the king — this is the nakshatra of seniority, authority and hard-won capability. Its symbols are protective: an amulet, an umbrella, insignia of rank. Mercury gives sharp intelligence and skill, and the eldest-child energy gives responsibility and a wish to protect those in its charge. People with the Moon in Jyeshtha are competent, self-reliant and often carry more than their share; they can appear reserved or proud, guarding a sensitivity underneath. The strength is capable, protective authority. The eldest can grow isolated, proud and secretly resentful of the load it carries. Jyeshtha can be controlling, defensive, prone to feeling unappreciated, and quick to see slights to its rank. The sensitivity it hides can turn to bitterness or a sense of being burdened and alone, and it can push help away just when it needs it most. The work is to ask for help and share the weight — to let authority rest sometimes, to receive care as well as give protection, and to loosen the guard it keeps up.

Tradition associates Jyeshtha with positions of responsibility and protection: management and administration, the military and police, medicine, engineering, any role that carries authority and looks after others. These people do well where competence is trusted with weight, and where someone has to be the one who copes. In relationships they are protective and loyal but guarded, and the growth edge is vulnerability — letting the people they shelter see and support them in turn.
