Each nakshatra divides into four padas of 3°20′. A pada is one navamsa, so the Moon’s pada refines the reading — it is what a chart uses to place you within Krittika.

Krittika is fire that has a job to do. Its deity is Agni and its symbol is a blade, so it both illuminates and cuts — it separates the real from the false and it does not soften the verdict. Solar rulership gives a strong, proud, self-directed core. People with the Moon here are sharp in perception and in speech; they notice what is wrong quickly and say so. There is an appetite too — the flame that cooks and consumes — so they can be surprisingly sensual and fond of good things beneath the ascetic edge, and this doubleness of the austere and the hungry runs through the whole nakshatra. They do not like being crossed, and they carry an inner heat that others feel even when it is not shown.

The strength is clarity that acts. Krittika sees through pretence, holds a high standard, and has the nerve to cut what is not working — a project, a habit, a relationship — where others would let it drift. It has real purifying discipline: the capacity to burn off its own excess and start clean. Leadership comes naturally because the judgement is trusted, and it will do the difficult, thankless thing that a situation actually needs. There is protective courage here as well; Krittika defends what it values with heat.

The blade cuts both ways. Krittika’s sharpness can become criticism that wounds, a temper that scorches the people nearest it, and a pride that will not bend. It can mistake severity for honesty and burn bridges it later needs, and it can be impatient with anyone slower or softer than itself. The heat, unspent, turns inward as restlessness and irritation. The work is to aim the flame — to use the cutting judgement on problems rather than on people, and to let warmth, not just heat, be felt.

Tradition points Krittika toward work that rewards precision, courage and a discerning eye: the military and law enforcement, surgery, editing and criticism, cooking and metalwork, teaching that demands high standards. These people lead well and follow badly, and they are at their best when they are trusted to set and hold the bar. In relationships they are ardent and protective, and the growth edge is gentleness — learning that not every flaw needs naming, and that the people they love are not projects to be improved.
